The most popular poker in casinos as well as professional tournaments is undoubtedly Texas Hold'em. However, if we are talking about the general public, the more widely known poker variant would be the five card draw.
Five-card draw poker is perhaps the simplest poker variant available. You will rarely see this in casinos, but it is more known as a home game, played by families or between friends.
If you would like to learn to play poker, it is best to start with this variant. This is because five-card draw poker has the same principles all other poker variants use, but its game play is much simpler.
Players start by putting a fixed amount into the pot. This initial bet is called the 'ante.' Five cards are then given face-down to each player, with each card dealt in turn. The remaining cards in the deck are then put aside.
Players then proceed to betting. Each player acts in turn, often in a clockwise manner. As with any other poker, the betting round ends when all players call, or a single player remains in hand. If more than one player remains in hand after the first betting round, the draw phase then begins.
Each player discards a number of cards they wish to replace. All players who have discarded are then dealt the number of cards equivalent to the number they discarded, in turn. It is vital that each player discards their cards first before they acquire new cards, and that they always have only up to five cards in hand.
After the draw phase ends, another round of betting occurs. If the betting round ends with more than one player in hand, a showdown of hands takes place. Remaining players compare their hands, and using the standard poker hand ranking, the one with the best hand wins.
There are variations of the five-card draw poker procedure, but these are very minimal. The differences are primarily based on using dealer buttons and blinds instead of an ante, and the limit of wager. Some variations may put a limit on how many cards could be replaced.
Five-card draw poker is great for people who are interested in poker but knows only general information about the game. Because it only has two betting rounds, play is much faster. Also, because players are dealt a complete hand of five, it would be a good opportunity to practice becoming familiar with the poker hand rankings. Play five-card draw poker with your family and friends, and have fun while learning.
